This is a HUGE topic, and one that can really get founders in a bit of a fluster at times as they desperately try to understand what they can do to build a diverse team and company, without necessarily knowing how they can do it πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

My favourite explanation of DEIB that resonates with me still was Verna Myers, possibly adapted by some one the way, but it’s one that makes it quite easy to quickly understand the concept of DEIB.

Diversity is being invited to the party Inclusion is being asked to dance Belonging is feeling comfortable how you dance, or whether you dance at all

Equity has over time replaced the idea of equality too, again a subject that has confused many a founder trying to understand this topic whilst scrambling to get their business off the ground.

This is my favourite explanation of equity, which gives immediate understanding of how it differs to equality.

You can clearly see the concept of equality here is giving everyone the same, regardless of what they actually might need. Whereas equity strives to ensure resources are shared and attention given to people on a more proportional basis to their needs.

Anyway, crash course over, again this topic is far-ranging and has many rabbit holes, but where I tend to work with founders focuses on:

- πŸ“ Establishing policies

- πŸ† DEIB initiatives & champions

- πŸ€— DEIB in your hiring process - gender neutral job descriptions, equality statements, anti-bias training and tooling to help you be as unbiased and as diverse in your hiring as possible
